Freshman Cheyanne James (Virginia Beach, Va. / Kellam) put down a career-high 14 kills, while hitting over 30 percent, to lead the Radford volleyball team to its fifth sweep of the season on Friday afternoon over George Mason. Set scores for the first match of the Crowne Plaza Philadelphia West Penn Invitational were 25-17, 25-17 and 25-15.
Defensively, Emily Carlin (Downingtown, Pa. / Bishop Shanahan) and Katelyn Meeks (Richmond, Va. / Mills Godwin) led the way with 15 digs each for RU. Christine Beckham (Ashburn, Va. / Stone Bridge) charted a match-high 17 assists and 10 digs for her second consecutive double-double.
Lana Zonjic found the floor for nine kills to lead the Patriots (2-9) in that category. Lauren Goodell dished out 15 helpers, while Bernetta Moore tallied 14 digs.
With George Mason leading 11-10 in the first frame, the Highlanders (7-6) used a 10-1 run to go up 20-12. The deficit was too deep for the Patriots to climb out of as Radford took a 1-0 lead in the match on a Jesse Miedema (Huron, Ohio / Huron) kill.
The Highlanders raced out to a 9-3 edge in the second stanza and stretched it to ten at 21-11, prompting a George Mason timeout. After an attack error by Zonjic set up set point for Radford, the Patriots reeled off four straight points to make the score 24-17.
However, Miedema was there to answer the call like she did in the first set. After Meeks distributed the pass over to her, Miedema hammered it down for the game-clinching point, giving the Highlanders a 2-0 lead in the match.
After scoring the first eight points of the third frame, Radford was poised to make the contest a quick one. The Patriots trimmed the lead to six, 17-11, but RU claimed the next three points to end the rally.
With match point at stake, George Mason's Morghan Martin was met at the net by Emma Deininger (Wallingford, Pa. / Strath Haven) and Savanna Burton (Narrows, Va. / Narrows). The duo rejected the Patriot's attack for the match-clinching winner.
