Maroons Fall In Women's Soccer Opener

Roanoke-Maroons-LogoThe Roanoke College women's soccer team fell in the final six minutes of its season opener to Fredonia State University, 1-0 on Friday, August 31st.

This game was the first ever meeting between the two teams and the opening game of the 2012 Roanoke College Soccer Invitational.  The Maroons move to a record of 0-1 while the Blue Devils rise to 1-0 in their overall standings.

Both teams held each other scoreless through the first 84 minutes, but with six minutes to play, the Blue Devils struck.  Fredonia's Maggie Horan served a ball to the middle of the box, where Reilly Condidorio slipped one past the right side of the keeper for the 1-0 lead.  The advantage would stand for the next six minutes, and Fredonia took the first game of the Roanoke Invitational.

The Maroons outshot the Blue Devils 14-7, 10-3 in the second half.  Roanoke also led in corner kicks by a margin of 5-1.

Parenteau led the Maroons in shots with four, with two on the face of the goal.  Freshmen Ashley Barnes and Kirstin Figel had two shots each, along with Kara Kapell and Carmen Graves who also fired off two.

Carolyn Sarbacher played all 90 minutes in the goal for Roanoke and tallied two saves on the night.

The Maroons return to action on Saturday night as they play Maryville College at 7:30 PM in the final game of the evening.
