Six different players scored in Roanoke College's men's soccer 6-1 victory over Gwynedd-Mercy on Saturday, September 1st.
This contest marked the first meeting between these two teams. With the win today, head coach Scott Allison picks up career win #297 and has a record of 297-156-39. The Maroons open up the season with a record of 1-0 while the Griffins fall to 0-1 on the year.
The Maroons attacked on offense for most of the first half, but had a hard time finding the back of the net early. In the 36th minute, Roanoke notched its first goal when Robert Finn capitalized on a rebound, and put the ball away for the 1-0 lead.
Just two minutes into the second half, the Maroons got a penalty kick opportunity that AJ Tierce converted, and put Roanoke ahead 2-0. Gwynedd-Mercy eyed a comeback at the 50:00 minute mark as Dan Panepresso put the ball just under the cross bar from about 25 yards out, cutting the Roanoke lead to 2-1.
Roanoke was quick to recover, however, as Carl Leist and Brian White scored goals two minutes apart at 53:10 and 55:06, respectively. With a 4-1 lead, Johnny Hughes scored on a free kick outside the box, slipping one past the keeper for the Maroons' fifth goal of the game. Roanoke would only find the back of the net once more as freshman Nicholas Staufenberg netted his first career goal with just 1:10 left to play.
White and Grant McAvan were the only Maroons credited with assists on the afternoon. Hughes and Tierce led the Maroons in shots with three each. Roanoke outshot Gwynedd-Mercy 21-4 in the contest and held the edge on corner kicks 7-3.
The Griffins' Greg Gengaro tallied nine saves in his 90 minutes in the goal. Panepresso had three of Gwynedd-Mercy's four shots.
The Maroons return to action on Sunday, September 2nd as they face off against #22 Neumann University. That contest is scheduled for a 2:30 PM kick-off.
