Seth Walker nailed a walk-off single to right field in the bottom of the sixth to bring home M.J. Hunter with the winning run, as the Christiansburg All-Stars nipped Blacksburg 4-3, in a nail-biter during Saturday's Dixie Minors Baseball Tournament at JC Field in Blacksburg.
Trailing 3-2 going into the bottom of the sixth, Zalen Akers led off with a single to left and went to second on a pass ball. Hunter followed with an RBI double to tie the game at 3-all. Walker then smacked a single to right that allowed Hunter to score the winning run.
The Blacksburg All-Stars looked like they would strike in the top of the first. Sam Helton hit a one-out single, followed by a single off the bat of Luke Goforth. Stephen Case then nailed a two-out single to load the bases. However, the inning ended when Parker Epperley hit the ball to Jason Duffie, who then stepped on first to end the threat. Christiansburg went down in order in its half of the inning.
In the top of the second, Blacksburg's Tyler Underwood led off with a triple. Adam Sealy was then hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Bennett Shelor then hit an RBI single to score Underwood. Blake Butler followed with a single to load the bases. Eric Heinze then hit an RBI single to score Sealy and Cordel Croy followed with an RBI walk that scored Shelor. Helton then hit into 6-4-3 double-play to end the inning with Blacksburg leading 3-0. Christiansburg would answer in the bottom of the inning. Zalen Akers led off with a single and later scored on an error to make it 3-1.
Christiansburg would score again in the bottom of the fourth. Akers was the recipient of a one-out walk. He went to second on a pass ball and then stole third and later scored on an error to make it 3-2
Blacksburg appeared they would add some insurance runs in the top of the sixth when they loaded the bases with two-outs. However, Christiansburg would stop the threat, thus setting up the exciting ending.
Luke Goforth, Bennett Shelor and Cordel Croy led Blacksburg with two hits apiece.
M.J. Hunter led Christiansburg with three hits and Zalen Akers added two hits.
Christiansburg will play Pulaski West at 6 p.m. today in the winner’s bracket, while Blacksburg plays Radford at 4 p.m. in an elimination game.
