Day four of the 2010 Dixie Ponytails Tournament would see a huge storm roll into Motor Mile Park to delay things for a while, but one the action got underway the Montgomery County All-Stars would win their first ever district crown.
A rematch of one of the most thrilling games of the tournament would take place again, this time for the championship. East Mont would retire Montgomery 1-2-3 in the first and then strike in the bottom of the first. Mikayla Phoenix would single followed by a triple off the bat of Alexus Richardson, an error in the outfield would let Richardson score as well as East Mont as they would take the early 2-0 lead. The score would stay right there until the third.
In the top of the third Rachael Smoot would lead off with a triple to get Montgomery started. Olivia Boyd would follow with an RBI double, Andrea Tiller would then hit an RBI double of her own to score Boyd. Marissa Ehrhardt would pick up an RBI single scoring Boyd to turn the game around and give Montgomery County its first lead at 3-2.![]()
In the fifth inning, Montgomery would strike again. Haley Sale would lead off with a single and would come around to score following Smoot’s second triple of the day. Tiller would also get her second hit of the game and score following another Ehrhardt hit. The score was now 5-2 in favor of Montgomery County. Montgomery would add two more runs in the sixth inning as Kayla Altizer and Kylie Naughton would each get on base and come around to score. Paige Saville pitched the complete game for Montgomery County. For the tournament she pitched two complete games, going 2-0, only giving up 3 runs and striking out 18.
For Eastern Montgomery, it was not the result they had hoped for, but for the tournament, they played absolutely great. Their heart and determination and never say die attitude was very impressive. For Montgomery County is was a first, their first Ponytails title ever. The team battle hard all the way through the tournament and have positioned themselves for a run at state.
Next up is the state tournament which begins on Friday, July 16 in Farmville, VA. Montgomery County will represent District 3 and play the District 6 champion (TBD) at 4:00PM.
Botetourt County won the Sportsmanship Trophy.
