William Byrd hosted the Heritage Pioneers of the Seminole District Monday in the quarterfinal of the Region III boys tennis tournament. In 2009, the Terriers lost a tough match to Spotswood in the region quarterfinals, and the sting of that early exit served as a prime motivator for 2010. When it was all said and done Monday, the Terriers advanced with a 5-2 decision.
Brennan Escobar maintained his high level of play at #1 singles and dispatched the Pioneers' Mitchell Paige 6-1; 6-2. Joseph Davis, as he did throughout district play, followed suit with at 7-5; 6-1 win over Seth Griffin at #2 singles. Heritage #3 man Ryan Reynolds humbled Jim Fisher 6-2; 6-0, but Byrd's Trevor Perdue handled Harrison Smith 6-2; 7-6 (7-5) at #4 singles to give the Terriers the early 3-1 lead. Byrd's #5, sophomore Bryce Martin, lost a tough, three-set match to Griffin Spencer of Heritage, but ever improving Will Trent won convincingly 6-0; 6-2 over Jerome Carter at #6 singles, giving Byrd at 4-2 lead.
The Terriers' #1 doubles duo of Brennan Escobar and Trevor Perdue closed out the match decisively with a 6-0; 6-2 victory over Mitchell Paige and Ryan Reynolds.
With the 5-2 triumph, William Byrd advances today's Region III semifinals and will host Harrisonburg High School at 3 p.m.
