In a game that wasn't decided until the final minute, the Bears would sneak past the Green Wave for an exciting 46-45 win the championship game of the Region C, Division 1 girls bsketball tournament Saturday night at George Wythe.
Both Bland County (22-5) and Narrows (20-5) advance to the state quarterfinals, which will be played later this week.
The Green Wave would take a quick 9-7 lead after the first quarter. The Bears would outscore their fellow Mountan Empire District foe, 14-9 in the second quarter, to take a slim 21-18 halftime lead. Narrows would open up the third quarter with a 16-4 run and by the time the period ended, held a 34-28 advantage going into the pivotal fourth quarter. Bland County, who hit 8-of-10 free throws in the fourth quarter, would take the lead for good with under a minute to go on a pair of foul shots by Laurel Hankins. Narrows had a couple of chances to win the game in the final 30 seconds, but was unable to convert, thus allowing Bland to claim the title, 46-45.
Samanth Burton led Narrows with a game-high 18 points.
Laurel Hankins led Bland County with 17 points. Samantha Magyar chipped in with 12 points and Kirby Mustard had 10 points.
