Cave Spring opened its season Monday by defending its crown in the 15th-annual Heritage Invitational, in which more than 120 golfers from across the region teed it up at the par-72 London Downs Golf Course by a two-shot margin over three schools, who came home tied for second.
The Knights finished with a team score of 315. Franklin County, Hidden Valley and Jefferson Forest all finished with identical scores of 317.
In a tiebreaking procedure, the Eagles were awarded second, as its 317 score beat Hidden Valley by virtue of a second tiebreaker, the lowest combined team score on the front nine. The Titans claimed third place, as both teams eliminated the Cavaliers with the first tiebreaker, which was lowest score by the fifth golfer, the score dropped from the team tally.
Jefferson Forest's George McDaniel had a super round, firing a 3-under 69 to win medalist honors.
Freshman Drew Lagan led Cave Spring with a round of 75. sophomore Nick Brediger carded a 77, while sophomore Drew Board and sophomore Jesse Hart finished with an 80 and 81, respectively.
Most of the area teams will return to the links Thursday, as they participate in the Metro at the Botetourt Country Club.
