Zach Chase finished first overall to lead Christiansburg to the boys team title, while Mikayla Richardson led the girls squad to a third place finish in the annual Runnin with the Wolves Rocktoberfest Cross Country invitational held Saturday at Wolf Branch Farm in Forest. The Blacksburg boys and girls team finished fourth.
Chase took the top spot with a time 16:13.10, beating out Radford's Walker Mogen by 16 seconds (16:29.04).
Other top finishers for Christiansburg included Matt Spurlock (third, 16:47.00), Neal Eaton (12th, 17:12.14), Alex Cooper (17th, 17:31.12), Matt Fonseca (23rd, 17:39.06), Aaron Lowe (44th, 18:08.35) and Tony Deibler (62nd, 18:28.11).
“Overall, I thought it was an excellent performance from all of our runners in all divisions. They have been working extremely hard this season and it was great to see their hard work coming together for some outstanding performances,” said Christiansburg head coach Shane Guynn. “I think this past weekend gave our kids and excellent gauge of where they are at this point and where their hard work has been going! We still have quite a ways to go until the end of championship season, but this was an excellent building block to reach that point.
Kenneth Hagan led Blacksburg with a ninth place showing in a time of 17:11.12. He was followed by Nick Wilson (27th, 17:50.04), Flip Bishop (34th, 18:00.96), Jacob McCoy (41st, 18:05.87), John Mattingly (43rd, 18:08.4), Jared Hildago (46th, 18:09.10) and Matthew Conner (48th, 18:09.84).
Christiansburg finished first with 57 points, followed by Clover Hill (87), E.C. Glass (117), Blacksburg (152) and Spotswood (196) to round out the top five teams. A total of 148 runners and 22 teams competed.
Richardson paced the Lady Blue Demons with a seventh place finish in a time of 19:46.42. She was followed by Allison Sherman (13th, 20:24.07), Cassie Linkous (22nd, 20:44.00), Bailey Knowles (24th, 20:50.59), Megan Burns (27th, 21:01.51), Kelsie Wade (41st, 21:57.00) and Briana Graham (59th, 22:42.57).
The Lady Bruins were led by Claire Ewing-Nelson, who finished tenth with a time 20:10.81, followed by teammates Jennifer Fleming (30th, 21:09.01), Sabrina Yamaguchi (37th, 21:24.35), Elizabeth Phillips (42nd, 21:57.32), Brooke Stephenson (48th, 22:06.34), Emma Stowe (55th, 22:25.88) and Jordan Sardello (56th, 22:32.58).
Jefferson Forest won the girls crown with 44 points, followed by Myers Park (69), Christiansburg (93), Blacksburg (160) and Cave Spring (173) to round out the top five teams. A total of 127 runners and 19 teams competed.
