Blacksburg dug themselves into an early hole and could never recover, as Hidden Valley came away with a 15-7 win in the semifinals of the River Ridge District baseball tournament Wednesday afternoon at Calfee Park in Salem.
Hidden Valley (14-6-1) will face Salem (14-7) for the tournament championship at 7 p.m. Friday, while Cave Spring (12-10) will take on Blacksburg (12-10) in the consolation game at 4 p.m. Both games will be played at Calfee Park.
The Titans would take a 5-0 lead in the first inning on RBI singles by Cam Hodges, Logan Blankenbeckler, Andy Richards and a RBI double off the bat of Ian Trampe.
The Bruins would get on the scoreboard in the top of the second. Three straight singles by Trevor Bennett, Ben Fraley and Vinny Oddo would load the bases with no outs. An RBI walk by Osimani would make the score 5-1. However, that was all the Bruins could muster, as the next three batters went down in order.
Hidden Valley tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second. The highlight being a lead-off inside the park homer by Hodges.
The Titans increased their lead to 10-1 in the third inning, as they crossed the plate three times. The big blow was a two-run RBI by Hodges.
The Blacksburg bats would come to life in the fourth inning. An RBI single by Michael Simonetti, and two-run singles by Nick Sburuti and Justin Bishop allowed the Bruins to score five runs and cut their their deficit to four 10-6.
An RBI single by Sburuti in the sixth inning pulled Blacksburg to within three, 10-7.
Hidden Valley would put the game away in the bottom of the sixth, as they broke loose for five runs and would set the Bruins down in order in the top of the seventh, to secure the 15-7 victory.
Cam Hodges led Hidden Valley with three hits and three RBIs. Carter Wright had three hits and two RBIs, Ian Trampe added two hits and three RBIs, while Logan Blankenbeckler had two hits and an RBI.
Bradley Moore picked up the win for the Titans. He went four innings, giving up six runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out three.
Nick Sburuti led Blacksburg with a 2-for-2 effort, including three RBIs. Michael Simonetti went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Justin Bishop was tagged with the loss for the Bruins. He gave up 10 runs on nine hits, walking two and striking out one in three innings.
For the game, Blacksburg committed seven errors, compared to three for Hidden Valley.
