In a back and forth affair, Salem managed to hold on for a 28-21 non-district football win over William Byrd Friday night in Vinton.
The Terriers took a 7-0 lead in the opening quarter on a 1-yard plunge by Zac Hill.
The Spartans used a 10-yard and 62-yard pass from Matt Hill to Chad Fisher to take a 14-7 halftime lead.
A 9-yard pass from Hill to Fox gave Salem a 21-7 lead early in the third quarter. William Byrd would pull to within seven, 21-14, on a 14-yard run by Simeon Horstman.
The Terriers tied the game, 21-21, early in the fourth quarter on a 17-yard pass from Horstman to Hill. A 6-yard scramble by Arrius McConnell would gave Salem the 28-21 win.
Salem tallied 293 yards of offense. Matt Hill completed 12-of-17 passes for 175 yards.
William Byrd posted 319 yards of offense. Zac Hill ran for 139 yards and Simeon Horstman added 128 yards.
