Covington jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, as the Cougars ran away with a 40-7 non-district football win over Auburn Friday night in Riner.
The Cougars (1-1) took a 6-0 lead in the opening quarter on a 15-yard run by Troy Helton at 1:51 mark. A 50-yard gallop by Brandon Phillips (11:37), a 1-yard run by Helton (5:44) and a 22-yard pass from Luke Moye to Colton Howard (:17) gave Covington a 26-0 halftime lead.
A 29-yard scamper by Moye in the third quarter increased the Covington lead to 33-0 with 2:56 showing.
Auburn (0-2) avoided the shutout in the fourth quarter on a 6-yard run by Dustin Simpkins and Vlodomir Phillips PAT made it 33-7 with 5:41 left in the game. An 81-yard kickoff return by Helton made the final 40-7, Covington.
Covington, who posted 427 yards of total offense, was led by Brandon Phillips with 120 yards on four carries and Troy Helton added 91 yards on 13 attempts.
Auburn, who tallied 216 yards of total offense, was led by Gabe Spencer with 87 yards on 13 carries. Justin Craft added 58 yards on 18 carries and Phillip Wills finished with 46 yards on nine carries.
Defensively, Tyler Irby led the Eagles with nine tackles. Simpkins and Michael Hinkley added five tackles apiece, while Jordan Fleenor finished with four tackles.
