Galax, the Group A state runner-ups, used its ground game, as the Maroon Tide ran away with a 42-22 non-district football win over Eastern Montgomery Friday night in Elliston.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Maroon Tide (2-1) would get things started in the second quarter. A 34-yard run by Steven Peoples, a 12-yard scamper by Donte Peoples and a 70-yard gallop by Steven Peoples gave Galax a 21-0 halftime lead.
Steven Peoples busted loose for a 37-yard run early in the quarter to extend the Maroon Tide to 28-0. The Mustangs (2-1) finally broke the drought when James Fields connected with Daryl Manns on a 6-yard pass and the two point conversion made it 28-8 after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, Galax used a 30-yard scamper by Steven Peoples and a 17-yard run by Dixon, along with a 1-yard pass from Fields to Ron Ford and a 32-yard scoring strike from Fields to Ford made the final 42-22, Galax.
Steven Peoples led Galax with 333 yards on 22 carries and four touchdowns. Donte Peoples contributed 75 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown.
James Fields led East Mont with a 25 -for- 43 passes for 181 yards and three touchdowns, while Daryl Manns ran for 123 yards on 17 carries.
