In the Battle of the Bridge, Radford managed to escape Dublin with a thrilling 32-29 victory over Pulaski County Friday night. It was coach Todd Jones' debut for the Cougars.
The win was sweet revenge for Radford head coach Matthew Saunders, who saw his team fall in last year's state semifinals to a Todd Jones coached Essex squad.
The Bobcats (1-0) took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter on a 29-yard run by Grant Mitchell. The Cougars would tie the game with 59 ticks left in the opening quarter on a Randall Cobbs 22-yard run.
Radford would then score 19 straight point in the second quarter. An 8-yard run by Kevin Adkins, an 8-yard pass from Dontae Carter to Corey Dark and a 5-yard strike from Carter to Craig Palmer would give the Cats a 26-7 halftime advantage.
The Cougars would strike first in the third quarter. A 6-yard run by Cody Long and 40-yard gallop by Jamall Payne would pull Pulaski to within theee, 26-23, with 6:25 left in the quarter. The cats closed out the quarter with a 1-yard plunge by Carter to make it 32-23 heading into the fourth quarter.
A 20-yard run by Randall Cobbs early in the quarter allowed Pulaski County to pull to within a field goal, 32-29. The Cougars had one last chance late in the game. However, several penalties hurt Pulaski's last ditch effort, thus allowing Radford to head back home with the Battle of the Bridge trophy.
Pulaski County, who racked up 247 yards on the ground, was led by Randall Cobbs' 139 yards.
Radford, who chalked up 218 yards, was led by 62 yards from Grant Mitchell. Dontae Carter passed for 87 yards on a 7-for-11 night, including two touchdowns and a pick.
